1. Different types of plants.

    GRASSES, BUSHES AND TREES.

                          GRASSES
                               - Grasses have a thin stem.
                     - They are soft and flexible.

Grass = hierba, césped
grasses = hierbas
thin = delgado/a/os/as
stem = tallo
soft = suave/suaves
flexible = flexible/flexibles (que no es duro)
to have = tener
a = un, una
they = ellos/ellas

                            BUSHES

              Bushes have  - a thick, hard  STEM
                                    - with low BRANCHES.

Bush = arbusto
bushes = arbustos
thick = grueso /gruesa / gruesos / gruesas
hard = duro/dura/duros/duras
stem = tallo
with = con
low = bajo/baja/bajos/bajas
low branches = ramas bajas
branch = rama
branches = ramas

                                    TREES

Trees have a thick, hard stem called trunck.
 thick = grueso /gruesa /gruesos / gruesas
 hard = duro / dura /duros /duras
 stem = tallo
 called = llamado
 trunck = tronco

2. Parts of a plant.

    ROOTS
    FLOWER
    LEAVES

3. Remember.

    a. The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and
                        fix the plant into the ground.

    b. The leaves use sunlight to help make the plant's food.

    c. The flower attracts insects which help the process of
                                                                      pollination.

4. Which parts of the plant do we eat?

               PART OF                                         WE
               THE PLANT:                                   EAT:
                root..................................................carrot
                stem.................................................asparagus
                leaves...............................................lettuce
                flower...............................................broccoli
                seeds.................................................peas
                fruit...................................................tomatoes

5. LIFE PROCESSES.
                     -NUTRITION
                     -INTERACTION
                     -REPRODUCTION

A. Nutrition
     Plants use sunlight, water and nutrients from the soil
                      to make their own food.

B. Interaction
     -Plants react to their environment.
     -They grow towards the light and
       their roots grow towards  water.

C. Reproduction
     -Most plants reproduce by making seeds that grow into
                                           new plants.

     -Some produce spores.

 The spores are produced under the leaflets so that they will not be affected by the sun and also it would be less probable for it be caught in sight. The plant while bearing the spores is called a sporophyte. This is how the reproduction happens after the production of spores.

6. REMEMBER.

             Plants give us oxygen.
             Deciduous trees lose their leaves in winter.
             Plants can make their own food.
             Some plants are born from seeds.

7. REMEMBER.

    -DECIDUOUS TREES.
                            -They lose their leaves in autumn.
                            -Oak trees are this type of tree.
                            -They have branches, roots, a trunk and leaves.

    -EVERGREEN TREES.
                            -They produce leaves all year round.
                            -Pine trees are this type of tree.
                            -They have branches, roots, a trunk and leaves.

8. Read sentences about things that plants give us.

          a. Plants give us oxygen.
       b. Plants give us fruit to eat.
       c. Plants give us cotton to make clothes.
       d. Plants give us wood to make furniture and paper.
       e. Plants give us other materials to make other products such
           as soap and medicine.

A trip to the biology fair.

BODY SYSTEMS

 LUNGS

HEART

THE HEART IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR DIFFERENT PARTS

 NUTRIENTS

Llamamos nutrientes a todas aquellas sustancias que conseguimos a partir de los alimentos y
que son necesarias para el correcto funcionamiento del organismo.

Básicamente, los empleamos para obtener energía,
                       construir nuestra propia materia y
                       participar en la regulación de algunos procesos del organismo.

Los nutrientes no son alimentos, sino componentes de los alimentos.

BLOODSTREAM

stomach

small intestine

brain

spinal cord

nerves

organs

1. Listen and read.
    - Alex and Carla are learning about
      body systems...

2. Read the descriptions below and
    match them to the pictures.

    1. We are able to breathe because of
         this system.
         1-C  Respiratory system.

    2. This system breaks food down
         into nutrients.
         2-B  Digestive system.

     3. This organ pumps blood
          around the body.
          3-E  Heart.

     4. This system moves blood through
          the heart and  around the body.
          4-D  Circulatory system.

     5. The brain, spinal cord and nerves make up
          this system.
          5-A  Nervous system.
